Sightseeing in Shanghai

Shanghai's dualistic character is a fact. On the one hand, it is a metropolis and the number-one commercial centre of China. On the other hand, you can still trace historical links and aspects of traditional living.

Shanghai Sightseeing
The People's Square.

The People's Square in the center of Shanghai and the south side of People's Park, is the political, cultural, commercial center and the hub of traffic. In the past, here was large stretch of cement land. After reconstruction, the People's Square combines the flavor of Chinese traditional culture with the modern city in one, expands the function suitable for use, increases the sightseeing function, let Shanghai glow with youthful vitality.

The Bund.

The Bund, an Anglo-Indian term for the embankment of a muddy waterfront, facing the river with its magnificent collection of European and Japanese colonial architecture, runs along the Huangpu River and there are plenty of street performers, peddlers and food. The Bund is most spectacular with one side of the boulevard lined up with buildings of "Old-fashioned American big city" style. These used to house banks, trading houses and exclusive clubs. Look at the grandeur of the Bank of China and the Greek columns of the Customs House.

Sun Yatsen's Residence.

The great forerunner of China's Democratic Revolution Dr Sun Yatsen and his wife Madame Soong Ching Ling lived and worked here for the revolution from 1918 to 1924. Here Dr. Sun met with representatives of the Chinese Communist Party and brought about the first Nationalist-Communist coalition in history.

HK and Shanghai Bank.

A little way south down the Bund from the Peace (turn right as you face the river) stands the Hong Kong & Shanghai Bank. By the time this grand branch opened in 1925, the bank was reputed to be the largest bank in the Far East, whose building is a unique set of contemporary murals rediscovered during recent renovation work.

St. Ignatius Cathedral.

Xujiahui Catholic Cathedral, is one of many places of public worship which have received a new lease of life in recent years. Built in 1906, it was closed for more than ten years during the Cultural Revolution, reopening in 1979. The congregations are remarkable for their size and enthusiasm, especially during the early Sunday morning services and at Christmas or Easter.
